Kenneth Spaeth

Put your kidney where your heart is… consider becoming a living kidney donor for someone in need.

Detective Kenneth Spaeth, a dedicated law enforcement officer, received a life-changing diagnosis just as he was preparing to enjoy his well-deserved retirement. With dreams of traveling the country with his wife put on hold, Kenny now faces the urgent need for a kidney donor.

About Kenneth Spaeth

A month before retiring from the NYPD, routine blood work revealed alarmingly high creatinine levels, a sign of severe kidney issues.

Kenny had been experiencing symptoms such as swollen legs, extreme fatigue, and dizziness, which he initially attributed to the demanding nature of his job. However, the reality of his condition soon became impossible to ignore.

His career began in Florida, but he spent the majority of his professional life with the NYPD, serving as a detective in Brooklyn and as a 9-11 first responder. Kenny loved being a detective because it allowed him to stand up for people and fight for justice alongside his colleagues. The togetherness and camaraderie among first responders were some of the aspects he cherished most about his job. He also took great satisfaction in investigating cases, following leads, and pursuing the bad guys, which made his work both challenging and rewarding. Now, Kenny needs someone to stand up for him as he faces his toughest battle yet.

Kenny’s wife, Nechel, is no stranger to the challenges of kidney disease. She is a kidney transplant recipient herself and has been an unwavering source of support and knowledge throughout Kenny’s journey. Together, they have sought the best possible care, and the medical team has been instrumental in starting Kenny’s transplant workup proactively.

Now retired, Kenny focuses on maintaining his health and staying active. He enjoys spending time with his family, watching his nephew’s sports games, and making the most of his days with Nichelle. Their dreams of traveling the country in an RV and enjoying retirement together are on hold as they search for a kidney donor.

The response from the community, the NYPD network, and friends far and wide has been heartwarming. However, the need for a kidney donor remains urgent.

Living donor transplants offer the best outcomes for recipients. By becoming a kidney donor, you can provide Kenny with a new lease on life. Your support, whether through sharing his story, spreading the word, or considering donation, is invaluable.

KIDNEY DONATION

How does kidney donation work?

A donor doesn’t need to be an exact match. In fact, because of the Nobel Prize-winning paired kidney exchange program, your kidney donation will not only save one life, but it will save several more in the chain.

Living kidney donation is safe, and all costs associated with your donation are covered. Living donor kidneys also last much longer than deceased donor kidneys. A deceased donor kidney transplant, on average, lasts 10-15 years, while a living donor transplant lasts 12-20 years.
