Kidneys for Communities has received Congressional recognition from Steny H. Hoyer
(MD-05) for the organization’s impact in increasing access to life-saving kidney
transplants — particularly for first responders and other close-knit communities
nationwide. The tribute was made to Congress at the start of March’s National Kidney
Month by Hoyer, one of longest serving and most senior members of Congress.

In his remarks, Congressman Hoyer highlighted the urgent national challenge of kidney
disease, which affects tens of millions of Americans in every neighborhood, town, and
state. He commended Kidneys for Communities for “supporting this effort to ensure our
firefighters and other first responders receive the support they need,” adding that kidney
disease “demands the attention of every Member of this Congress.”
Kidneys for Communities is dedicated to expanding living kidney donation through its
first-ever national community-directed donation program. By partnering with first
responder organizations, unions, employers, municipalities, farmers and ranchers, and
other membership-based communities, the nonprofit educates and connects donors and
recipients within their own networks — increasing the likelihood that a life-saving kidney
can be directed to someone in need.
“We are honored to receive such noteworthy recognition from Congressman Hoyer and
thank him for his ongoing support,” said CEO Atul Agnihotri, himself a kidney transplant
recipient. “While our work is most recognized during National Kidney Month, we strive
year-round to bring life-saving kidney transplants to first responders, children, farmers
and ranchers, and other social groups in need.”
National Kidney Month shines a spotlight on a growing health crisis. Kidney disease is
the ninth leading cause of death in the United States and affects more than 37 million
American adults. This proclamation underscores both the urgency of the issue and the
power of community-driven solutions to save lives.
