Kidneys for Communities® needs your support

Alexa

Put your kidney where your heart is… consider becoming a living kidney donor for someone in need.

You’d never know what Alexa has been through from her laugh, which fills every room she walks into. Born with kidney complications, she has been on dialysis for thirteen months and is still searching for a living donor.

About Alexa

Complications at birth affected Alexa's kidneys, and she has spent her life navigating medications, doctor visits, and hospital care. Her family started searching for a living donor long before she needed dialysis. They're still searching.

Her mom, Vanessa, says Alexa is "a sweet girl who, despite her challenges, is always a bundle of joy, laughing and smiling. She never lets her illness get her down. She is the light of our lives."

Alexa is in 9th grade and loves school, but dialysis keeps her from so much of being a kid. She can't swim or ride roller coasters with her friends. She misses family vacations, playing basketball and Skee-Ball, riding her bike, walking the family dogs, and time with her abuela, Gloria.

Think back to your first year of high school. Now imagine spending it on dialysis. For Alexa, that's real. A living donor could give her the rest of high school back.

KIDNEY DONATION

How does kidney donation work?

A donor doesn’t need to be an exact match. In fact, because of the Nobel Prize-winning paired kidney exchange program, your kidney donation will not only save one life, but it will save several more in the chain.

Living kidney donation is safe, and all costs associated with your donation are covered. Living donor kidneys also last much longer than deceased donor kidneys. A deceased donor kidney transplant, on average, lasts 10-15 years, while a living donor transplant lasts 12-20 years.
