Kidneys for Communities® needs your support

Wyatt

Put your kidney where your heart is… consider becoming a living kidney donor for someone in need.

Wyatt is a resilient three-year-old who has faced more medical challenges than most will in a lifetime. Born with kidney disease, Wyatt’s journey began with uncertain odds, but his love for life continues to inspire everyone around him. This is Wyatt’s story—a story of strength, love, and hope for a brighter future.

ABOUT WYATT

Wyatt's mom, Hannah, first learned something was wrong during a routine 20-week ultrasound. She had been excited to find out if they were having a boy or girl, but the appointment took an unexpected turn when it was discovered that Wyatt’s kidneys weren’t developing as expected.

As the weeks went on, Hannah was also told she had little to no amniotic fluid, raising serious concerns about whether Wyatt would make it to birth. “He’s defied a lot of odds,” Hannah reflects. “We weren’t sure if he’d even make it.” Wyatt was born and taken straight to the NICU, where his health journey began.

For Wyatt, living with kidney disease means facing challenges that most children his age never have to think about. He is on a constant cycle of medications, dietary restrictions, and regular doctor appointments to monitor his kidney levels. Even small illnesses, like a cold, can lead to hospital stays. His condition also affects his energy levels, and he can only attend preschool for half a day.

One of the hardest parts of Wyatt’s condition is the constant thirst he feels due to his kidneys’ inability to regulate fluids. Despite drinking large amounts of water each day, his body doesn’t fully register it, leaving him feeling dehydrated and uncomfortable. “His little body doesn’t realize that it’s not thirsting to death, but he feels like he is,” Hannah says.

Despite the challenges he faces, Wyatt is a curious three-year-old with a love for trains, animals, and spending time outside with his big brother, Cooper. “He just loves people,” says Hannah, describing Wyatt’s friendly nature. Though his health often limits his energy, Wyatt enjoys preschool, where his friends greet him with hugs each morning. At home, he spends time setting up train tracks in the living room and loves learning about animals.

For Wyatt and his family, a kidney transplant would mean a world of difference. With a new kidney, they look forward to him finally experiencing life with more energy. It would allow him to spend full days at preschool, keep up with his friends, and enjoy childhood with fewer limitations. Wyatt’s family hopes that, with this new start, he can have the freedom to explore, play, and grow as every child deserves.

If you feel moved by Wyatt’s story, please consider becoming a kidney donor or sharing his journey with others. Many people wonder if adults can donate kidneys to children, and the answer is yes. KIDNEY DONATION

How does kidney donation work?

A donor doesn’t need to be an exact match. In fact, because of the Nobel Prize-winning paired kidney exchange program, your kidney donation will not only save one life, but it will save several more in the chain.

Living kidney donation is safe, and all costs associated with your donation are covered. Living donor kidneys also last much longer than deceased donor kidneys. A deceased donor kidney transplant, on average, lasts 10-15 years, while a living donor transplant lasts 12-20 years.
